Murphy has expanded its fleet with seven Kubota UK excavators – a combination of KX085-5 models at around 8.4 tonnes and compact U27-4 machines at approximately 2.5 tonnes. Despite the difference in size, each machine has been fitted with Xwatch Safety Solutions part of Hexagon safety technology to bring a consistent standard of control across the fleet.
The line-up includes both XW4 and XW5 systems. XW4 delivers precise height and slew control with proportional hydraulic restriction, supporting safe operation in confined or sensitive areas. The XW5 (for the larger machines) adds rated capacity indication for lifting work, creating a full safe working envelope around the machine and operator.
All seven systems were installed by Xwatch engineers Billy Hughes and Luke O'Reilly, ensuring each excavator was configured and calibrated to Murphy’s site requirements.
Murphy’s decision to pair Kubota reliability with Xwatch safety systems reflects its ongoing commitment to reducing risk, improving operator confidence, and maintaining a modern, compliant fleet suited to restricted-access and urban works.
Shellplant Ltd Distributors of Construction Equipment has a long-standing preference for Xwatch systems across its Kubota installs, with the two businesses working closely for years — a partnership built on trust, consistency, and a shared focus on getting safety right from day one.
Julian Payne, Director at Shellplant, commented:
“Nothing is too much trouble for Jemma. If Carlsberg Group made sales and operations managers, Jemma would undoubtedly be the mould. The Xwatch systems, as specified by our customer, have proven to be highly reliable and hassle-free. The installation team is also excellent and as dependable as they are trustworthy. Jemma has been great to work with and a real asset to the process.”
Jemma Dycer - Hopkins (IOSH), Sales and Operations Manager at Xwatch, added:
“Julian and the team at Shellplant are brilliant to work with. The XW4 and XW5 systems are a great fit for these Kubotas, and we really value their trust in Xwatch. It’s always a pleasure getting a call from Julian — he keeps us on our toes and makes the whole process enjoyable. Partnerships like this are what keep projects moving smoothly and safely.”
With Murphy continuing to set high standards as a tier one contractor, this move reinforces a clear commitment to safer working practices and consistent protection across its fleet — regardless of machine size or operating weight.
